Fall Paddling Adventure: The Outer Banks of North Carolina

November 7–13, 2027
Register For 2027 Here

Discover the wild heart of the Outer Banks — from the cockpit of your kayak.
Fall in North Carolina's Outer Banks is a season every paddler should experience. As the barrier islands transition into autumn — with crisp breezes, migrating birds, colorful marshlands, and fewer tourists — we'll explore a region where history, wildlife, and water are inseparably linked.
The Outer Banks are a chain of barrier islands separating the Atlantic Ocean from the vast saltwater sounds and mainland. Fed by freshwater rivers and creeks flowing into Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, this dynamic ecosystem offers sheltered paddling, abundant wildlife, and access to places that can only be fully appreciated from the water. Throughout the week, we'll paddle some of the most scenic and historically rich areas of the Outer Banks, including Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Roanoke Island, Corolla, and Ocracoke Island — each with its own story to tell.
Our home base is the centrally located Sea Ranch Resort in Kill Devil Hills, perfectly positioned for daily excursions, with a restaurant on-site and multiple dining options nearby.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is ideal for travelers who:
  • Want sheltered, wildlife-rich paddling on sounds, creeks, and refuges
  • Love birding and wildlife viewing — otters, ospreys, herons, wild ponies, and possibly alligators
  • Are drawn to maritime, colonial, and pirate history
  • Appreciate a comfortable oceanfront "base camp" with daily excursions (unpack once!)
  • Enjoy crisp fall conditions — highs in the 60s–70s, refreshing coastal breezes, and the chance of light rain
  • Prefer a small-group atmosphere for a relaxed, immersive experience

Itinerary (subject to weather and tides)

Day 1 – Arrival & Orientation (Kill Devil Hills) Arrive at our waterfront base camp near Kill Devil Hills in the afternoon. After settling in, we'll gather for trip orientation, kayak outfitting, and a welcome dinner. Enjoy sunset views over the water as we preview the week ahead. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 2 – Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge Today we explore Milltail Creek, a quiet tributary of the Alligator River. This area is home to the northernmost population of American alligators on the East Coast and one of the last strongholds of the endangered Red Wolf. The paddling is peaceful and immersive, winding through a remarkably diverse ecosystem. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 3 – Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Recognized worldwide as a birder's paradise, Pea Island boasts an incredible list of over 300 bird species. We'll paddle along the waterside of the refuge on Pamlico Sound, then stretch our legs with a hike on refuge trails featuring photo blinds, towers, overlooks, and spotting scopes. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 4 – Roanoke Island Roanoke Island has a rich colonial history. We'll paddle to a replica of the Elizabeth II, a 69-foot, two-story ship that carried Sir Walter Raleigh's colonists to the New World. Afterward, we'll see Jockey's Ridge, the largest sand dune on the East Coast. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 5 – Corolla (Currituck Sound) Explore Currituck Sound, home to wild ponies roaming the sand dunes and a healthy population of ospreys. Paddling here offers incredible wildlife viewing and photo opportunities in a serene barrier island environment. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 6 – Ocracoke Island Ocracoke Island is steeped in pirate lore, famously associated with Blackbeard. Paddle near Teach's Hole, the site where Blackbeard anchored and met his end. Expect to see otters, herons, and the vibrant barrier island ecosystem. Overnight: Sea Ranch Resort
Day 7 – Departure Enjoy a final breakfast together before packing up and departing. Take with you memories of kayaking, wildlife, history, and the unmatched beauty of the Outer Banks in fall.
