Experience your next adventure in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania! Many people don’t think of Central Pennsylvania as an outdoor recreation destination but there are an endless paddling and hiking opportunities in the area. FJ Sayers Lake located within the Bald Eagle State Forest is over 1700 acres and the creek that feeds it offers miles of kayaking options. There are countless hiking trails and wildlife viewing options in the region as well.

On this adventure we kayak different sections of Bald Eagle Creek and FJ Sayers Lake, enjoy some short hikes, visit the historic Curtin Village Ironworks and have a half day off to explore on your own. Use your down time to take a walking tour of “Victorian Bellefonte”, go fishing on one of the many local trout streams, take a ride out to the Elk Country Visitors center to look for elk, visit Penn’s Cave or relax at the Inn with a book.

Our lodging while in this area is at The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle. The inn is very difficult to get group reservations at we are lucky to have reserved the rooms that we did. The inn, part of the Pennsylvania state park system and located within the Bald Eagle State Park, was voted the #1 Eco-Lodge in the nation. With only 16 guest rooms overlooking FJ Sayers Lake, on site dining and hiking trails the inn is a perfect to get away and enjoy the outdoors.

Trip Highlights

  • Paddling with the flow of Bald Eagle Creek.
  • Visiting an undiscovered region in Central Pennsylvania.
  • Short and scenic hikes.
  • Beautiful scenery and wildlife viewing on FJ Sayers Lake.
  • Exploring the Curtin Village Ironworks.
  • The beautiful surroundings, hiking trails and lake at The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive and get settled into your lodging prior to meeting at 5:30 PM for a trip overview and dinner.

Day 2 – After breakfast we will go for a short hike on the Butterfly Trail before getting geared up to paddle FJ Sayers Lake from Hunters Run East. Hunters Run East is the closest boat launch to the Inn and provides access to the low wind and low traffic Hunter Run Cove and the main body of the lake beyond the cut.

Day 3 – Today we paddle Bald Eagle Creek from Milesburg to the Bullit Run access on FJ Sayers Lake with a stop at Curtin Village Ironworks along the way for your picnic lunch (about 6.4 miles and approximately 4 hours on the water).

Day 4 – In the morning we paddle from Bullit Run where Bald Eagle Creek feeds into FJ Sayers Lake. The area provides the largest no wake zone within the lake, access to wildlife-filled wetlands and is a great option for paddling to the main body of the lake. The afternoon you will have off to explore on your own. Take a walking tour of Victorian Bellefonte, go fishing on one of the many local trout streams, take a ride out to the Elk Country Visitors center to look for elk, visit Penns Cave or relax at the Inn with a book.

Day 5 – Today we paddle a different section of  Bald Eagle Creek from Eagleville to the Mill Hall Access (about 7 miles and 4-5 hours on the water).

Day 6 - After another hearty breakfast at the inn, check out will be at 10:00 AM.

*Itinerary is subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
